from<b> VITAL WEEKLY</b><br />
There are strong ties between Fossils and Kendra Steiner Editions; it is almost like one could say, taking cues from the real record industry that Fossils have a recording contract with them, but with the notion of just 48 copies available, one realizes this is perhaps a bit silly thinking. This new one is also co-released by the group's own Middel James Co. label. Fossils are, as always, Daniel Farr and David Payne, ever since I first heard of them (see Vital Weekly 532) when they were a trio. They play improvised music and seem to be using whatever they can lay their hand on, which on 'Camelot Towers' sees the presence of guitar and piano as the two principal instruments to be played, along with their usual feedback, small synth/lo-fi electronics, a bit of percussion (less than before it seems) and Dictaphones. Feedback is something that should not be taken in terms of loud noise per se, as the thirteen pieces here are very modest affairs actually, almost like chamber music. Rather than a studio recording, I had the impression here that they are in a small club, with an upright piano, a microphone in the middle of room and do an all free-improvisation on the main instruments. For a while I thought Fossils would go the way of P16.D4 and that they would take their improvisations to another level, and play around with them in a more musique concrete kind of way. Some of their previous releases hinted that way, but they never really went for it, which I personally think is a pity. While I enjoyed this release quite a bit, like I usually do with their music, I think a leap forward might not be a bad idea. However if you like your improvisations to be raw and untamed and you think along the lines of Corpus Hermeticum, then Fossils are still safely in the place they are now.<br />

from<b> BLOG TO COMM</b> <br />
Yet more from the now defunct Hamilton Ontario-based Fossils, who
surprise with each and every release that comes out not only on Kendra
Steiner Editions but the Middle James Co. if you can believe that. On CAMELOT TOWERS
the duo of Daniel Farr and David Payne cook up a slew of sounds that
you can wrap your prehensile mind around, at times doing these duos
where one of 'em plays a Cecil Taylor-styled piano and the other clanks
away on an acoustic guitar while at others producing electronic sounds
that remind me of my stomach around suppertime when its gurgling on real
loud like. For some strange reason I was reminded of watching Sunday
morning television during my younger years when CAMERA THREE
would present somethingorother on twentieth-century musical compositions
written by guys with Albert Einstein hair. Relive those lost days of
wading through educational television while waiting for the cartoons to
come on with CAMELOT TOWERS.<br />

<div style="text-align: left;">
word from Bill Shute, Kendra Steiner Editions:</div>
For the first of SEVEN Fall-Winter 2016 albums, KSE is proud to
present our longtime friends, the only band that matters (to us),
Hamilton, Ontario’s FOSSILS, with a newly recorded (Spring 2016)
collection of sound sculptures that investigate the duo’s painterly
interest in space and texture. While the sound varies from track to
track, many of the pieces are piano-based, with sparse but clotted
bursts and squiggles that suggest a Twombly painting in sound, mixing
with what sounds like a slack-stringed guitar, played to bring out the
metal of the strings. There’s also electronics on some tracks, which
adds a nice electric-charcoal shading to those pieces. The telepathic
interplay between Farr and Payne is superb on this album—-those who
liked our duo album of last Fall by Tom Crean and Mike Barrett will also
like this, though it’s very different.<br />
As I write this on a hot September South Texas afternoon with a
shadowy overcast sky and thunder rumbling somewhere in a neighboring
town, and the wind wants to pick up but it can’t overcome the sense of
dread and stillness, and no one wants to get up and do something,
knowing it will be rained out, this FOSSILS music is the perfect
soundtrack. Our environment sounds like a backward-run tape!<br />
If you are new to FOSSILS, these gentlemen (with various other
co-conspirators over the years) have been an important force in the DIY
free-improv/noise community for many many years. When KSE branched into
music, we knew FOSSILS had to be on our label. Their whole “junk
sculpture” aesthetic and lo-fi approach has always seemed to me the
perfect extension of the punk aesthetic. Really, is there anything more
punk than, say, the Nihilist Spasm Band or the L.A. Free Music Society? I
think not….<br />
I spend a lot of time listening to FOSSILS music, and it’s always a
sonic head cleaner, with (as stated above) a painterly attention to
texture and shading and space. It is pure, it is always fresh, and it is
four-dimensional sound sculpture of the highest order.<br />

<span style="font-size: x-small;">In the free-improv/ lo-fi /sound-sculpture / noise world, FOSSILS are
truly the only band that matters, and we at KSE are proud to partner
with them once again. I listen to FOSSILS music a lot—-it’s the perfect
antidote to a regulated but insane world. The intuitive absurdist SENSE
in their playful and exploratory paintings in sound gives me faith in
humankind. Try it—-cheaper than drugs or therapy.</span><br />read the rest of Bill's piece <a href="https://kendrasteinereditions.wordpress.com/2015/12/13/new-album-from-fossils-modern-architecture-kse-324/" target="_blank">here</a><br />

Long-awaited follow-up to the premiere Cardinal Records release is now available in physical and digital formats! Once again join David Payne (Fossils) and Howard Stelzer in a journey of mangled tape and twisted electronics. Recorded in Lowell, Mass at Gallery 119 in August 2014.<br />
<br />
<br />
Published by Tape Drift Records (US) as a CDR in a limited edition of 50 copies.<br />
from the label: "Swelter indeed. A hot slab of collaborative psychic
summer energy burn from two of the finest experimentalists in North
America – Howard Stelzer and David Payne (Fossils). Two-man howl of
shredded tapes and analog junk recorded live in August 2014 in Lowell,
MA, the music on this disc is all about texture, sizzle and feel. It
would be folly (and beside the point) to pick out individual
contributions, as both voices blend superbly into a single slab of
sound. When the music is this good, it’s far better to sit back, let
the sound wash over you and experience the ultimate sonic catharsis. A
dense and even psychedelic mind scrubbing that offers multiple
epiphanies and aesthetic rewards. New details emerge with each listen,
but it’s the overall immersive effect that will pull you back in time
and time again. Like entering a new world where time and space have
collapsed and all that remains is the beautiful abyss."<br />

<i><b>Painters 11</b></i> were a group of abstract artists active in Canada (specifically Ontario) during the 1950s. Members of Fossils Payne & Farr began their interest in P11 in 2014 and have since had the unique opportunity to view and photograph a large number of works by group members. They have visited museum archives and attended exhibitions in attempts to learn more about these important cultural figures. They are now ready to share their discoveries via a new P11 blog:<br />
<a href="https://painters11.wordpress.com/" target="_blank">https://painters11.wordpress.com/</a><br />
The site has the following interactive menus: <br />
<a href="https://painters11.wordpress.com/upcoming-exhibitions/" target="_blank">"Exhibitions"</a> provides current and upcoming information about where to view artworks.<br />
<a href="https://painters11.wordpress.com/links-portal/" target="_blank">"Links Portal"</a> collects info on P11 previously published on the internet.<br />
<a href="https://painters11.wordpress.com/photo-gallery/" target="_blank"> "Works by P11"</a> provides photographic documentation of artworks by member of P11. In many cases, this site is the only place online to view these images. <br />

<span id="goog_398844509"></span><span id="goog_398844510"></span><br />
<i><b>Brian Ruryk</b></i> has been making tapes for over 30 years. He's been working away, deconstructing solo guitar and continues to be a shining light in the Canadian underground scene.<br />
<br />I recently caught up with Ruryk at a show he was playing in Toronto. His live performances are intense displays of destruction often involving overturning crates of rubber balls, throwing debris, broken guitars, general mayhem. These sets are volatile, bordering on violent, Dada and not to be missed. I asked him about new releases and he reached down under some dead leaves and pulled out three cassettes. Each one was taped inside an envelope and the task of getting the cassette out meant partial destruction of the packaging. A very clever move and a finger in the face of collector scum. <br />
<br />Each of these tapes are 60-minutes, showcasing what Brian does best: disorienting guitar garbage cut-up scrambles. In the age of short attention spans, no piece of sound on these seems to last more than 30 seconds - most much less - expertly collaged with all-thumbs, layered with weird field recordings and found sound. These are handmade self-releases. I thought the label had no name, no catalogue numbers as the packaging never indicated any. However, recent internet trolling has led me to discover the label does have a name: <i><b>Eyeofth Ephallus</b></i>. Also, there are catalogue numbers. However - as most information on the internet - this is suspect as the site also lists a cassette from 2002 with a higher catalogue number than those released this year... <br /><a href="http://www.discogs.com/label/764915-Eyeofth-Ephallus">http://www.discogs.com/label/764915-Eyeofth-Ephallus</a><br />
<br /><i><b>"Trout Mask Replica"</b></i> - According to the packaging this tape of "Guitars etc" is dated November 2014 and is the newest release of the batch. Some brief vocal stutters captured and sew across acoustic strum offs. This tape has some nice quieter almost ambient moments interspersed amongst explosions. The splice of pilfered radio/TV recordings add to the aural confusion. <br /><i><b>"Nothing But Trouble"</b></i> - This tape came out at the end of October. The words "acoustic guitars in public" is scrawled on the cover and it's a pretty good description of the sounds on the tape. A document recorded live on the streets of Ontario then collaged together by the artist captures passing planes, traffic, conversations and guitars at varying fidelity. Weird tape warbles and sharp cuts create some great environments. <br /><i><b>"Country Style Guitar and Blues"</b></i> - The liner notes say this was recorded at Ruryk's Toronto jam space. The axe was clearly left in the blender. Acoustic/electric burn outs and feedback fast-action rip this tape along at break-neck speeds. Distorted and dangled out the window this tape is weird for sure... <br />
<br />Not only is the anti-collector packaging appealing in this day of mass consumption and commodity fetishism, I also commend Ruryk's working method. When so many artists turn to rare or expensive equipment, boutique pedals and fancy post-production to polish their final product, these tapes contain the raw deal. Not to say they were not edited with care but Ruryk works with material at hand, found in the street, broken and breaking down. If you like the sound of breaking down, get the real thing:<br /><a href="http://www.discogs.com/seller/rickywahlbanger/profile">http://www.discogs.com/seller/rickywahlbanger/profile</a><br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
Bill Shute of KSE had this to say...</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<i>This latest installment from the ever-evolving FOSSILS crew could be described as “<b>chamber Fossils,</b>
” if such a thing is possible. If you can imagine FACE TO FACE-era
Spontaneous Music Ensemble with washes of electronics woven into the
fabric, you might have some idea of how this sounds….then again, it’s
really nothing like that! It’s largely acoustic, with instruments being
played in coloristic, non-traditional ways and with subtle electronics
(and found speech—an absurd yet sad phone message). The FOSSILS emphasis
on texture is primary once again, but in a way that’s fresh and
unexpected….and that’s pretty much true of ANY Fossils performance or
album…which is why they are ESSENTIAL to the scene.</i></div>
<i>
</i>
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
<i>Back during my teenage years, The Clash used
to be billed by their label as “the only band that matters” (let’s not
forget that this is the same label that once ran the infamous “The Man
Can’t Bust Our Music” ad campaign in the late 60’s). I can’t imagine Joe
Strummer approving that line, except perhaps ironically, but if there
ever WAS a unit deserving of the title, I’d say it’s FOSSILS, who may
make a lot of noise but let the work quietly speak for itself in the
marketplace (no hype, no hipster posing, no airbrushed pics in The
Wire). And if there is a DIY lo-fi independent label I admire and that
is an influence on KSE, it’s Fossils’ imprint Middle James Co. They are
experimental without being pretentious, their music can be both witty
and jarring (simultaneously), and even after dozens and dozens of
releases, I can truthfully say that I have NO IDEA what their next
release will be like. With so many “art edition” labels out there, and
with “underground” distributors and zines seemingly forgetting the
DIY/punk/Warhol-esque basis of all we do and favoring a cojones-free
artschool approach to packaging and presentation, FOSSILS and Middle
James are out there keeping it honest and keeping it low budget and
REAL. KSE is proud to be partnering with Fossils and MJC on another
release. Get it quick….only 24 copies available from us…and 24 from
MJC….</i><br />

CARDINAL RECORDS is proud to announce<br />
two new Fossils releases in physical and digital formats<br />
material for both recorded direct to tape december 2013-april 2014<br />
@ mjc hq hamilton, ontario; fossils were Daniel Farr and David Payne<br />
<br />
continuing to work with Texas poet Bill Shute and his wonderful Kendra Steiner label<br />
co-released with Middle James Co. we have the "wooly bully" cdr in an edition of merely 40<br />
here's what Bill writes:<br />
<h4>
So much electronic music or “noise” is boring or academic or repetitive
or stupid or pretentious—-it lacks the FEELING and EMOTION and SENSE OF
PLAY WITH INFINITE POSSIBILITY that initially got me excited about
feedback/white-noise/electronics/noise-improv. Thankfully, FOSSILS are
around to keep it raw and real and witty and abrasive and fresh and
spontaneous and ever-evolving. Remember Wile E. Coyote always trying to
blow up the Road Runner with various ACME explosive products? WOOLY
BULLY is the free-improv/noise/DIY electronics version of Looney Tunes
Acme products….AND SO MUCH MORE. It’s like a musical version of a Stan
Brakhage film but on steroids and with banana peels on the floor of the
editing room. FOSSILS are the reigning kings of sly DIY industrial noise
free-improv. Therefore, we at KSE are proud to announce that we have
partnered with Middle James Co. of Ontario, Canada for this VERY limited
Fossils release: a stunner of a CDR album, with a total of 40 copies
made, 20 copies (odd numbers) available from Middle James Co/Cardinal
Records and 20 copies (even numbers) available from KSE.</h4>

Cardinal Records is proud to present<br />
<br />
CARD11 FOSSILS ‘preliminary sketches of death’ 7-INCH LATHE + CDR<br /><br />
Recorded July 11 2013 at MJC HQ in Hamilton, Ontario, this is another weird addition to the Farr/Payne duo catalogue. These hand-cut lathes bring Fossils even lower into the depths of lo-fi. Deconstruct all notions of fidelity in this cracked static landscape. Tho birthed during summer sizzle these sounds are ice cold... almost dead.<br /><br />
The two sides of the lathe were cut from a 10-minute improvisation included in it's entirety on a bonus cdr. The disc contains 30 minutes of sounds from the sameday session.<br /><br />
